Questions for the Week of Monday, April 27
  • How did telling Phoebe's story to her grandparents help Sal understand that her mother leaving had nothing to do with her? How does this understanding have an impact on Sal's relationships with others?
  • The author uses foreshadowing to build tension and excitement throughout the book. In Chapter 32, "Later I would realize that I had prayed for the wrong things." In Chapter 34, "That next day was probably one of the best, and surely the worst, in Gram's and Gramps's lives." What do you think the author is foreshadowing through these words?
  • Why do you think Mrs. Winterbottom left? Use evidence from the book to support your thoughts.
Questions for the Week of Monday, April 20
  • Describe the Winterbottom family.
  • Compare or contrast Gram and Gramps to some of your own relatives. Use examples from the book and your own life to show the similarities or differences.
  • One of the messages that appears on Phoebe's doorstep states "You can't keep the birds of sadness from flying over your head, but you can keep them from nesting in your hair." Explain what that statement means and which character in the book you think it applies to and why.
