Questions for the Week of Monday, April 13

  • Describe the main character, Salamanca Tree Hiddle.
  • When she first arrives, how does Sal feel about Euclid, Ohio?
  • Give an example of a flashback the author uses to enhance the story.

  1. Hey Everyone!
For the flashback that the author uses to enhance the story is when Phoebe and her family went to the carnival and there was this tall thin man at a booth who could guess ages very well! Though, if he didn't guess your age right within a year, you got a teddy bear! So.... Phoebe's dad asked the tall thin man what his age was and he said 52! But he was really 38.(By the way that is a really bad guess!!!) Anyway, this enhances the story by showing how unusual Mrs. Partridge is by that she can guess ages very well even though she is blind. It's weird because the man at the booth had to study your face and he was not blind and he still even got them wrong sometimes! So I think that Margaret Cadaver and Mrs. Partridge are sort of...different. If you know what I mean.
    Well ta-ta,

  2. Hi...again,
Well, the main character Salamanca Tree Hiddle has long black hair. I'm guessing it's very long and I'm talking to her backside long because at school the kids asked if she can sit on it. She also likes animals, because you know back in Kentucky you got to have your cows and chickens. At school she also saved a black spider that was in her desk. A SPIDER! I am scared of spiders and I would have just ran away from my desk. Phoebe is not lying..Salamanca is brave! Well, she is brave from things that most of us are scared of. Though, she is scared of a lot of random things like elevators, strict teachers (I wonder why...), brain tumors, car accidents, exc. Also, her mom died, that would not be pleasent etiher! Sal (short for salamanca)said that she was a true country girl at heart! But aren't most kentuckians? Though, I take her word for it that she is a country girl.
    That's all for now,

  4. Hello,
Salamanca is a cool name.I'm going to do the flashback of Phoebe. That's a COOL NAME too. Phoebe is a very shy person. It kind of reminds me of this guy named Uriah. He's really shy too, but he trusts people to keep their secrets. Kind of like Phoebe is to Sal. I think it was cool how they went to each other's house. I think Mrs. Cadaver has something to hide because she constantly never talks to Sal. Sal's dad doesn't really talk to her that much because he's obsessed with Margret. That's why it's good that Phoebe's her friend.

  5. ^that one isn't my flashback it's how she feels about ohio

  6. Hello fellow classmates,
How Sal feels about the town Euclid, Ohio is that she hates it. She didn't like how all the house are the same. She feels as her house is tiny, and all the rooms are small. She doesn't like the back yard because it is also small, and her imaginary cow could eat all the grass in one bite. Sal is very sad how there isn't a swimming hole at the house, like the one she had at her old house. She would love to go back to her old house, and live the way she used too. But at least she made 1 friend. But overall she is not a fan of this town.
    Bye Bye

how do you feel about the main character? I think you're so totally right when you say she's a country girl. Would you get annoyed if you had hair so long that people asked you if you could sit on it? I think I might.

    Peace out,
    EV1207

  8. response-- Hey EV1207,
I feel the same way about how she feels about the town. Yeah she is a weird country girl, and doesn't fit into this town.
She doesn't feel like she is brave, but really I think she is. She doesn't care of what the others think about her.
    Bye Bye

  9. I feel the same way about Salamanca Tree Hiddle, ev1207 She is very shy and quiet but also is self cautious because she has a lot of fears like; elevators, death, car accidents and stuff like that. But she is truly a country gal.

Salamanca is a pretty cool name and Phoebe. The name Phoebe reminds me of Friends. I love that show she is so funny especially when she sings her songs. I personally would not like to have the name Salamanca because 1) In Pre-School it would be hard to learn how to spell it. 2)It means an old Indian tribe (???) and 3) It looks like salmon.

  11. Hey, for the third time
Salamanca is the main character. She is a very outgoing person that gets treated like dirt from her dad who is obsessed with his girlfriend. She wants to go find her mom which, the way the book says it, it sounds like her mom is dead. Sal is going to take her grandparents with her. It says that Sal got locked in a car with her grandparents. How do you get locked in a car? Well however she did it she made the most of it.
She's kind of like AH or BK he could have fun with a rock.
    Talk to you later,

  12. 1. Sal feels that her new home of Ohio is very, very quaint. She doesn't like that it doesn't have one ounce of country in it( The swimming hole, cows, pigs, and stuff along those lines) and how it doesn't remind her of home either. She doesn't like Margret because she's stealing her dad away (in Sal's point of view) and she just doesn't understand why she and her dad had to move from their wonderful home in Kentucky, to the quaint place of Ohio.

  13. Phoebe's Gram and Gramps are very weird because they are always talking about weird things like her gram and gramps are kinda acting like spy's because they are going to go to Kentucky to Ohio and then they are going to go pick her up.

  14. Hello fellow classmate,
Sal is a very nice, and kinda weird girl. She is a country girl living with a bunch of people that wouldn't really like to hang out with her, because she is a country girl. She has very long hair, and people always ask her about her hair. She likes weird creatures like snakes and things. She isn't that good at making friends, but I think she is nice and kind to the people that are nice to her.
well that's what I think about Sal Tree Hiddle
Bye Bye fellow classmates of America AH1128

  15. 2. The character of Sal is very reserved and sort of feels like she's alone. Sal is a country girl through and through and doesn't like being taken away from something that's apart of who she is. Sal is kind of low in the self-esteem district and when she's in a crowd, I think she feels like's she's alone in a sea of faces. That would be an awfully terrible feeling in my opinion. Anyone with me on this one?

  16. HOLA! Salamanca Tree Hiddle is a country girlie and she seems nice but very shy. It says that she has long black hair that she could sit on. That would be very inconvenient if you know what I mean...... TEXT TO SELF CONNECTION- I am also afraid of elevators like Sal, because one time when I was in Ohio (which is kind of funny because Sal lives there) I got trapped in an elevator and now wherever I go, I always take the stairs, THEY ARE FASTER
    =D

  17. ev1207 this one's out to you,
About Sal....I feel ok with her but I think I have to know her a bit better.... And well I want long hair but only like to the middle of my back at the longest. Also, YES!! I would get very annoyed if people always asked if I could sit on my hair and I would tell them that I sure can whack people with it.

  18. Hey everybody,
Salamanca Tree Hiddle is a country girl at heart. She is a thirteen year old girl who has a lot of fears like; car accidents, brain tumors and ect., But she really likes wasps, bees, spiders and creepy crawlers. I'm certainly not like that. She has long black, I think it goes down to her butt. I wish I had long hair. She is not a very loud person, she keeps her feelings and thoughts to herself. She seriously does not like cities, she prefers the county where there are cows, pigs, and sheep and noise. She sure is a troubled teen.

  19. Hello people of the world,
This is my response to AH. No Salamanca does not like her new home. She calls it a cracker box. That would not be fun living in a box, if it were possible. She did get one friend, Phoebe who seems like she's the total opposite of her. She is shy and Sal is definately not.

  20. My dearest RHO530,
I LOVVVVVE to elevator surf!(comment like this was made because Sal is scared of elevators and rho530 talked about it) Though I am scared in elevators when I am by myself or with a creeper guy then I hide in the corner. For self assurance =D. Also the stairs are good exercise.
    Buh-Bye!

  22. AH,

Excellent observations about how Sal seems to dwell on the fact that everything is smaller in Euclid than in Bybanks! She seems uncomfortable in the city and misses the country. Many people love having wide-open spaces to explore and live in the country while other people prefer the excitement and convenience of living in the city. What does everyone here consider themselves? A country person or a city person?

    Ms. Steffen

  23. EV,

You mention that you think Sal has a low self-esteem. There are definitely parts of the book that show she doesn't have the most confidence. For example, when she refuses to agree with Phoebe that she is brave. Sal focuses on the things that scare her instead of the ways she is courageous. What other parts of the book support your observation? I am curious about everyone else's opinions. Do you think Sal has low self-esteem or is she just thrown out of her element because of her move to the city and therefore seems less confident? Give examples of why you feel that way.

    Ms. Steffen

  24. ZW,

You posted that you think Mrs. Cadaver has something to hide. I agree that the author makes Margaret a very mysterious character. What parts of the novel make you suspicious of her behavior? Does anyone have any predictions about what we might learn about Mrs. Cadaver later in the book?

    Ms. Steffen

  25. AB,

You called Sal a troubled teen in your post. I agree that Sal has experienced a lot of turmoil and change in her life recently, which definitely sets her up for trouble. What parts of the novel make you feel like Sal is troubled? How does everyone else feel? Is Sal a troubled teen or is she just a typical teenage girl going through some rough times? Explain.

  26. RH,

Great job making a text-to-self connection based on the fears that Sal experiences. What are some fears that you all experience? Is there a reason for these fears?

  27. The main character Sal is very weird she has really long hair and she is afraid of pregnant people and that is why she is very weird.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Again, I say Phoebe's Gram and Gramps are very weird because reading the next chapters they are calling her Peeby. I don't know why they would call her that because they know her real name I hope I mean they are her grandparents. They actually they remind me of little kids with nothing better to do so they act very childish.

  29. Yes AH she is a country girl and needs to stay in the country. her hates the city so once she finds her Mom she will move back to the country and stay there. And to everyone who wants her long hair I would hate her long hair I like short hair

  30. bs0311,

Question: Are you sure that the place in Ohio that she's in is in the city? I don't remember her mentioning that. I will agree with you that she should go back to the country. And I have a question for anyone to answer: is her mom dead?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ms. Steffen:

I have one fear, and one fear only: randiphobia. This phobia is a fear of frogs and toads and is very real. I don't know why, they just creep me out in a way.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ms. Steffen,
Some fears I experience are: elevators
    lizards and frogs
    rats and mice
    snakes and spiders
    bumble bees
    my mothers meatloaf
    the dentist.

  33. Ms. Steffen,
i feel Sal is troubled because she is hard to please. Like if there isn't cows, sheep, pigs, swimming holes, open area, a barn stuff like that she isn't happy. I guess it could be because she is home sick. She is just is typical teen though because she does and acts like what a normal teen should.

  34. Hello citizens of the world,
Ben reminds me of Taylor Lautner on Twilight as Jacob. He's shy but he totally likes Bella. He only shows it by bragging about how he fixed up her car though unlike Ben who just goes up to her and kisses her on the collarbone. Who kisses people n their collarbone? What the heck. Ben is like so shy it's cute. If he looks like Taylor Lautner I think Sal should tell him how she really feels because Taylor Lautner is a major BABE!

    ReplyDelete
  35. So! I say Ben is very weird. I am guessing that he is like from another country or is foreign or something. Mary-Lou's house sounds like a nut house! Also, her parent's don't even care! 1) Her dad reads in the bathtub 2) Mary-Lou's mom takes naps on the garage (??????) That is weird!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Sal and Ben have a thing going on between them............ but I don't really think that they have a relationship. I hope that they become friends because like some people said SHE ONLY HAS ONE FRIEND. poor kid

  37. Dear anyone who'll answer this question:
Do you think it's OK in Bybanks, Kentucky, that you can "borrow" someone's tire and then return it? I think it's a crime because it's stealing and also it doesn't make since, it's like a bank robber robbing a bank and then giving the cash back the next day!

    ReplyDelete
  38. The main character Sal has really really long black hair! She is also afraid of some very random things like elevators, strict teachers, pregnant people, brain tumers, and car accidents! I love elevators..... but sometimes I freak out when a lot of people are on them! Sal also loves animals. She saved a spider! Scary. She misses cows and pigs. I think she belongs in the country and not in a city!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ms. Steffen,
I think that Cadaver is hiding something because she's her dad's girlfriend but she never talks to her. (GASP) maybe she's her mom possibly. That woul dlike make me cry if my mom secretly lived with me all my life but I go all across the country to see her.
    ZW

  40. Ms.Steffen,
This is my answer to your question of what the people at this town think of themselves. They all think they are city people. And Sal is not even close to being a city person. I think would be hard for her to move there, because she doesn't like anything there, and she isn't used to being in the city. But all the people in the town are different like: Sal is a country girl, Phoebe's parents are all nice and answer people "yes Goerge" They act like they aren't happy about a lot of things, and Mary Lou and Ben's house is all messy and loud, and people are always running around. And Phoebe's neighbor is blind.

How does everyone think about Sal's grandparents? I think they are funny. But not people you would like to be in a car with for a long time.

    Bye BYe AH1128

  41. EV, I personally think that taking anyone's tires at any time is a little odd. But that's just me.

    ReplyDelete
  42. When Sal entered Euclid, Ohio she absolutly hated it. She didn't like the fact that the houses where so close together, and there was pratically no yard. I don't blame her I don't like the fact of being two feet away from another house. She also didn't like the fact that there was no swimming hole, or cows, sheep, pigs, or a barn.

  43. I'm dedicating this post to zw1215!
I got to agree, Ben sounds just like Taylor Lautner in Twilight. Even with like looks and how he sort of acts even though I've only met him for like a page ish. I think that Sal does not like him and that she believes that Ben is a creepy guy/weirdo!!!! Well I do right now anyway.....

    ReplyDelete
  44. Fellow citizens,
What do you think Sal will feel like when Ben leaves?
    ZW

  45. When she first arrives she hates Eluclid, Ohio. She misses the pigs, cows, and chickens. She thinks that it is weird that they don't have trees. There was no river or swimming hole. I think she is hard to please. She won't be happy without chickens, sheep, pigs, cows and all of the farm animals. I never had any farm animals and i am perfectly happy! Sal can't believe that she is going to like in Ohio.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Does anyone think that Sal meant pregnant people is who she's afraid of, or just pregnant laddies. 'Cause apparently guys can get pregnant now, and I just want a better idea of the character.

    ReplyDelete
  47. AH and other ppl, I think that the grandparents are funny but they wouldn't be people I would want to have as grandparents. One time I had to drive to Kansas with my grandma and grandpa, it was pretty boring but it was good quality time with them. then my grandma fell out of the car =(

    ReplyDelete
  48. EV,
If I had to pick someone in this school to steal a car tire and then return it it would be my cousin Shannon. Because he doesn't think before he acts and then feel bad and return it.

  54. AH,

Good question about Sal's grandparents! Personally, I think they are hilarious!! They are both very mischievous and march to the beat of their own drum. What do you think is the wackiest thing they have done so far in the novel?

    Ms. Steffen

    ReplyDelete
  55. RD0727

You would seriously want grandparents like Sal's. Might i ask why?
I wouldn't because they act like kids and get into trouble. And because they don't pronounce Phoebe Peebe. Awkward. And I would have to put up with them for hours at a time in a car going to Idaho. That would drive me insane.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hey ab0406!
Well ya I would want them as grandparents because they would be active and not nap all of the time. They would not yell at you, and they could care less about other's opinion is about them. I also like that when they do something wrong they act so innocent about it such as the tires and screwing up that ladies car. Driving with them might get annoying because they would yip-yap the whole way but pretty fun in my opinion. What does everyone else think?

    ReplyDelete
  57. RD,

I agree that Gram and Gramps would be hilarious to travel with! They do seem to have an innocence about them. They have a good heart, so even when they are doing something wrong it seems to be with good intentions, never malicious.

For example, when Gramps ruins the woman's engine, he honestly believes he is helping her out. He simply thought he was being a gentleman helping out a damsel in distress. In all actuality, he messed her car up even more! He's clueless! What funny characters!

    Ms. Steffen

    ReplyDelete
  58. AB,

I can see where you think Gram and Gramps would get annoying during a long car ride. I think you would have to know their personalities ahead of time and take them with a grain of salt to survive the trip. As long as you know they are eccentric, I think it would be fun with them!

    Ms. Steffen

    ReplyDelete
  59. RD,
I would like to have those grandparents too because mine just sit around all day! It would be fun to ride around with them all day because it would never be really really quiet. They would always be talking and the conversation would never end!!!!
